The higher more distant clouds aren’t white at all, more of a mauve, a pale bluish purple that gives the sky closer to the horizon line a darker smudge.

As they build that smudge will turn into a dark bruise just before it releases the water.

Kudzu and grape vines almost completely covered this tree along Cabin Creek.

Old and ailing, it leaned out over the road at a surreal angle for many years.

The vines kept on creating fantastical, ghost-like shapes.

A good wind, in the form of either Hurricane Joaquin or Matthew brought it down over the road finally.

The group of trees on the right is an island in the middle of a huge field of late corn. The trees are a haven for wildlife, especially birds. Big agribusiness doesn’t leave these micro environments standing but small scale farmers, who for the most part follow the sustainable practices of their parents continue to work in partnership with nature.

June corn already reaches waist high and moves like a green sea. In the rural South time can be measured by what crop is in the field and how high it is.

By July it’s higher than the cars on the nearby road. And by August it’s harvested and gone.

We think of green being a summer thing…

But it’s not just a summer color.

Winter grains, either wheat or rye, can make a mass of almost obscene green.

It’s a riotous green, much darker and more intense than the light yellow green of the new spring foliage in the woods.

Those changes, both subtle and large, in the color and light are one of the things that I find most fascinating about painting the same landscape regularly.

The clouds were roiling yesterday, twisting and turning as the front passed through.

Small bits of blue would peak through briefly and then get swallowed up by the rain-heavy masses.
